CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

At Shamblehurst, we believe that learning should spark curiosity, ignite imagination and inspire children to ask questions about the world around them. Through a carefully designed, knowledge-rich curriculum, we provide memorable experiences that capture children's interest and foster a lifelong love of learning.

From exploring ancient civilisations and significant historical events, to investigating our local area, discovering the wonders of the natural world and creating innovative designs, our curriculum is built around opportunities for awe and wonder. We encourage children to think deeply, make meaningful connections and develop the confidence to explore new ideas.

Learning is brought to life through high-quality texts, practical investigations, educational visits, visitors, outdoor learning and enrichment opportunities that broaden children's horizons and inspire ambition. Our curriculum enables children to see beyond their immediate experiences, appreciate the diversity of our world and understand their role within it.

In 2025, we moved away from an enquiry-based curriculum model. Instead, we designed a curriculum that places subject integrity at its heart, ensuring that children develop a deep understanding of the distinct knowledge and disciplinary skills within each subject. Where meaningful connections exist, subjects are carefully linked to strengthen understanding and help children make sense of their learning within a wider context.

We want children to learn not only what experts know, but also how experts think. Every subject offers a unique lens through which to understand the world. As children progress through our curriculum, they are encouraged to think like historians analysing evidence, geographers exploring places and environments, scientists investigating and explaining phenomena, mathematicians reasoning and solving problems, and artists creating, evaluating and expressing ideas.

This approach develops curiosity, critical thinking, resilience and independence. It enables children to ask thoughtful questions, evaluate information, draw meaningful connections and apply their knowledge with confidence. By helping children to "think like a...", we equip them with the skills and understanding needed to become successful learners and active participants in an ever-changing world.

By nurturing curiosity, creativity and a sense of discovery, we ensure that every child leaves Shamblehurst with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive, along with lasting memories of the moments that made them stop, think and wonder.

At Shamblehurst, we do not simply teach subjects; we develop historians, geographers, scientists, artists, mathematicians, athletes, musicians and responsible citizens who are ready to shape their future.
