HISTORY AT SHAMBLEHURST

At Shamblehurst Primary School, we believe that history helps children understand who they are, where they come from and how the world around them has been shaped. Through our history curriculum, we aim to inspire curiosity about the past and develop children into thoughtful, knowledgeable and critical historians.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build both substantive knowledge (what happened in the past) and disciplinary knowledge (how historians investigate and interpret the past). As pupils move through the school, they develop an increasingly secure understanding of chronology, cause and consequence, change and continuity, significance, interpretation and historical enquiry.

We want our children to:

  • Develop a secure chronological understanding of British and world history.

  • Know and remember key people, events and civilisations that have shaped our world.

  • Understand how historical events and individuals continue to influence life today.

  • Think critically about evidence and ask meaningful historical questions.

  • Understand that history can be interpreted in different ways.

  • Develop a sense of identity, belonging and respect for different cultures and societies.

  • Make meaningful connections between local, national and global history.

Our curriculum reflects both the National Curriculum and the unique context of our school. Children learn about significant local history, including Southampton's role in World War One, alongside studies of the Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Maya and Ancient Greeks.

History is taught through carefully planned units which progressively develop pupils' historical knowledge, vocabulary and disciplinary thinking from Year 1 to Year 6.
