MATHS

At Shamblehurst, we believe that every child can achieve and succeed in mathematics.

Our curriculum is carefully designed around White Rose Maths and enhanced through the use of Numicon Essentials and Number Sense Maths: Times Tables Fluency, enabling pupils to develop secure conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and confidence with number. In EYFS we also use NCTEM Mastering Number scheme to support teaching, alongside White Rose. Through a small-steps approach, the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, and carefully sequenced learning, children build deep and connected mathematical knowledge over time.

We are committed to ensuring that pupils think, talk and reason like mathematicians, using precise mathematical vocabulary to explain, justify and refine their thinking. Rich mathematical discussion, purposeful questioning and problem-solving opportunities develop resilience, curiosity and confidence in every learner. To ensure learning is retained and built upon, pupils engage in daily retrieval activities, revisiting concepts from the previous lesson, last week, last term and last year. This systematic approach strengthens long-term memory, identifies misconceptions and helps children make meaningful connections across their mathematical learning.

Assessment in mathematics is woven throughout every lesson and informs responsive teaching. Through skilled questioning, observation and retrieval practice, teachers continually assess pupils' understanding and address misconceptions in the moment. White Rose end-of-block and end-of-term assessments provide further opportunities to evaluate pupils' fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling teachers to identify gaps, celebrate success and plan next steps. This ensures that knowledge is secured in the long-term memory and that all pupils make strong progress through the mathematics curriculum

Our ambition is that all children leave Shamblehurst with a secure understanding of mathematics, fluency in number and times tables, the confidence to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts, and a genuine enjoyment of the subject. We aim to nurture mathematically capable, inquisitive learners who recognise the value of mathematics in the wider world and carry this confidence and appreciation with them throughout their lives.
