OUR VISION

In order to discover the brilliance in everyone we are committed to achieve:

  • A happy and healthy community

  • An engaged and accountable community

  • A compassionate and kind community

  • An inclusive community of empathetic and curious critical thinkers

  • A community that celebrates diversity

  • A community of Global Citizens

Shamblehurst Primary School is a place of belonging and inclusion – we are proud of our community and work hard to ensure everyone is included and celebrated.

We are teaching the No Outsiders curriculum. The No Outsiders curriculum teaches children to respect and accept difference and diversity using the Equality Act 2010 (British Law) as a solid foundation. It supports other work we do in school to prepare children for life in Modern Britain and teaches the children British Values. By embracing these principles, our school will become a safer place for all, where no child or member of our community will be treated as an outsider.

WHAT IS NO OUTSIDERS?

The No Outsider's vision is for inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens. It is based on the book 'No Outsiders in our School: Everyone different, Everyone Welcome’ by Andrew Moffatt. This provides support and resources to deliver the objectives outlined in the Equality Act 2010.

The No Outsiders resource provides lesson plans for each primary school year group (EYFS - Y6) based on a selection of picture books. The focus of the programme is around noticing, celebrating and developing resilience around diversity. Through discussion and activities based on picture books, pupils are encouraged to show respect and develop their understanding of diversity.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

It is important that we create a whole school culture in which children, staff and the whole school community work together to foster an environment of inclusivity through effective SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) and character education.

It is important that our children become empowered by their own sense of identity and individuality. They will be able to listen to and understand the views and beliefs of others, building positive relationships with all despite their differences. As an inclusive school, our teachers are confident to tackle and explore difficult situations, using positive language to create a sense of belonging for all.

When we first introduced No Outsiders, we worked with our families and community to discuss the vision and explore the picture books. We will continue to work alongside our families and parents to deliver this message of inclusivity – ‘Together We Can’.

Below you can see the picture books used in the No Outsiders Curriculum. Children share and discuss one book every half term. The books are developmentally appropriate picture books. All school staff will promote and recognise the ‘No Outsiders’ ethos through their conduct and day to day practice. Each Key Stage has a weekly ‘No Outsiders’ Assembly delivered by senior staff which supports and explores related topics and promotes the inclusive ethos.
