PHYSICAL EDUCATION
PE at Shamblehurst Primary School
At Shamblehurst Primary School, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in developing healthy, happy and confident children. Through a broad, balanced and inclusive PE curriculum, we aim to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong enjoyment of being physically active and to understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
We use the Twinkl Move It PE Curriculum – due to copyright we can not display this on our website.
Our PE curriculum is designed in line with the National Curriculum, ensuring that children develop competence across a wide range of physical activities, become physically confident and have opportunities to engage in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. As pupils progress through the school, they build upon fundamental movement skills and apply these increasingly effectively in a range of sports, games and physical activities.
We are committed to ensuring that every child achieves success in PE, regardless of their starting point. Lessons are carefully planned to provide appropriate challenge and support, enabling all pupils to develop resilience, determination and confidence in their own abilities.
Physical Education also makes a significant contribution to pupils' Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. Through PE, children learn to challenge themselves, reflect on their achievements and develop self-belief. They learn the importance of fairness, honesty, respect for rules and good sportsmanship. Working collaboratively in teams develops communication, leadership and cooperation skills, whilst experiencing a range of sports and physical activities helps children to appreciate diverse traditions, cultures and ways of life.
We also recognise the importance of physical activity beyond the PE lesson and strive to ensure that all children have regular opportunities to be active throughout the school day.
Our curriculum provides children with a carefully sequenced programme of learning that progressively develops knowledge, skills and vocabulary from EYFS through to Year 6. Lessons are planned to ensure clear progression, allowing pupils to revisit, practise and refine previously taught skills before applying them in increasingly complex contexts.
Children experience a wide range of activities, including invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, athletics, gymnastics, dance, outdoor adventurous activities and swimming. This broad offer enables pupils to develop agility, balance and coordination, whilst also fostering teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.
Teachers are supported through high-quality planning, assessment tools and professional development to ensure PE is delivered effectively and consistently across the school. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to help pupils articulate their understanding and deepen their knowledge of physical activity and sport.
Assessment is woven throughout the curriculum. Teachers use ongoing formative assessment to identify strengths, address misconceptions and adapt learning to meet the needs of all pupils. This ensures that every child can make progress and experience success.
Physical activity is also promoted beyond curriculum lessons through active breaktimes, sporting events, competitions, clubs and enrichment opportunities. These experiences provide pupils with additional opportunities to develop their skills, represent the school and foster a positive attitude towards health, fitness and wellbeing. Currently we provide a Girls Football Club in KS2, Cheerleading Club, JAMz Street Dance, Karate, Cricket and Outdoor learning, as well as regular cluster events.
By the time pupils leave Shamblehurst Primary School, they will have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities. They will understand how physical activity contributes to both physical and mental wellbeing and will be equipped with the motivation to remain active throughout their lives.
Pupils will demonstrate increasing competence, resilience and independence as they move through the curriculum. They will be able to work collaboratively, show respect for others, communicate effectively and display the values of fairness and sportsmanship both within PE lessons and beyond.
The impact of our PE curriculum can be seen through pupils' enjoyment of physical activity, their engagement in lessons and extracurricular opportunities, and the progress they make in developing both physical skills and personal qualities. Through PE, children leave us not only as more capable athletes, but as confident, responsible and respectful young people who understand the importance of healthy lifestyles and positive participation in their communities.
Through these rich experiences, our pupils embody our school values, develop strong character and are well prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond primary school.
